I love music. I love live music and am a bit of an eclectic collector of songs. I love to sing along. And I believe the one of life’s simplest pleasures is to sing in the car, full volume. On a day like today, when the weather is perfect, it’s Friday and payday, I find myself driving back from lunch with the sun roof open and singing along with Natalie and the Dixie Chicks.
Sometimes it’s Les Miserables (Do you Hear the People Sing?) and Beastie Boys (Paul Revere) and Sheryl Crow (Soak UP the Sun) and Mumford & Sons (Awake My Soul) and Closer to Fine (Indigo Girls) – I have lots of sing-along favorites.
Singing along in the car gives me energy and makes me happy. It’s like a 3 minute pick me up. I feel better at the end of the song. I love live music for the same reason. My SO has a “dad band” he loves it and I love to watch him perform. In all of us is what makes us happy. You have to know for yourself what picks you up, what gives you energy, what makes you happy. If you can’t name it then no-one else can either.
Personal Mastery is to know yourself and knowing the things that you love to do, then choosing to do them. I do love to sing along in the car. In a previous relationship, I was strongly discouraged, even asked, not to. Now I’m not a virtuoso singer and I don’t intend to try out for The Voice, but I’m not so terrible and I don’t do it that frequently that I was embarrassing myself or someone else. It hurt my soul that I was discouraged to do something that made me feel so good by someone you loved me. It’s funny, I’m just realizing now how much that bothered me. Today, I sing along freely.
So my encouragement for the week is do something that makes you feel good and happy. Simple right? Personally, I’m working on building out my BLV playlist on Spotify. You can follow it on Spotify and I’d be happy to include your favorite sing-along songs. Let me know what they are and I’ll add them.
Share below, what are you doing this week to make you happy? What are the things that get in the way and how do you overcome them?
Remember – if you comment on this post you’ll be entered to a drawing for BLV fabulous prizes. I bet prizes make you happy.
Secret: if there is absolutely no one in the house, chances are I will have the music blasting and I will be dancing!
David – sing loud and enjoy
Music is the bomb. Or da bomb. I can tell that I am connected to myself when I catch myself humming. Often I get my inspiration and support that way. I’ll hum a song and realize that its message is just what I need to hear. I don’t know what I would do without it and in my next life plan to be a torch singer in some non-smoky, dimly lit dive.
On an unrelated topic, would you talk sometime about your perspective on when there appears to be a conflict between one’s personal vision and the path the universe sets? Thanks. 🙂 I’d love to hear others’ thoughts about this too.
First – I can see you as a torch singer – you’ve got it in you!
Second – music finds me too and I’m grateful when I’m aware enough to hear it’s message.
Great idea – others weigh in but I’ll start on a post Pamela
