Early this summer, I found myself laying on a blanket on a perfect evening next to a darling girl (the niece of my SO) watching a movie. As I looked up at the tree next to us I noticed that it was filled, I mean filled, with fireflies. The tree was alive with flickering light that twinkle lights can only hope to approach. That’s what got me thinking about magic in life.
Magic is all around us, it’s in unexplained circumstances and perfect moments. Magic is learning something new just when you needed it. Magic is the timing of big events in your life colliding. Magic is the ebb and flow, the surprise and the expected. And to be a bit cheesy, Magic is fireflies and changing leaves and rainbows and how they paint our life with color. We can’t control it, so we might as well welcome it into our lives.
Sometimes magic is in how you look at each situation. During my first trip to France, every turn, every experience, every moment (even the moment of our car getting towed) had a magical sparkle to it. Part of it was I was in France, in love and on vacation. But part of it was my approach to each day, looking for the magic in each moment. When you look for it, it’s easier to find.
As I think about these experiences and many others, for me it’s less about what happens and more about how I approach what is happening. Can I approach a challenge with humor and grace, can I look for the shine and not the smudge in situations, can I find the magic in the everyday moment? And as I sit here on my perfect front porch, with a fall breeze, a beautiful glass of wine and my son and my sweet black lab I can see the magic all around me and I am grateful.
What does looking for magic have to do with BLV. Everything! Personal Mastery is approaching the world through your vision and your reality. Thinking, believing and creating vision is magical. Looking for the sparkle and magic is your choice. What do focus on: the smudge or the sparkle?
As I was finishing up this blog post I happened to receive a signed copy of one of my favorite author’s books . Coincidence or Magic? Magic obviously….
Kimberly, You are so right. Open up your perception, and you will find magic everywhere. Magic is something that we can create with our imagination and will-power. Just look around you; What magic the nature is, All the living plants and creatures. And on top of all 7+billion humans, that wakes up every morning with the option of seeing, hearing, feeling and doing. It is a miracle that it all works (although not perfectly for everyone). It is magic to be a part of it.
David – thank you for sharing. I love those moments that you can just sigh with happiness into. We spend too much time, I think, these days trying to capture them for Instagram vs. just being in them. I’ve been very intentional about my camera use lately – enjoying the moment first, documenting it later if at all. Enjoy all your magical moments…
Yesterday morning, painting and carving pumpkins with my wife and kids was one of those moments where I felt the magic.
