The last 6 months have been surreal. Sitting in my office 7 + years ago as I started this role with 1 direct report, no strategy and no real support, I didn’t think this was possible. I’m not even sure I knew what was possible.
But I had vision: personal vision and team vision has a lot to do with this success story.
The lesson here: When thinking about vision Think Bigger Than Big! Don’t limit yourself to what seems possible today. Think about what can be possible tomorrow.
Personal mastery is about personal vision but it’s also about shared vision. You can and should create shared vision with your teams and your family. Why wouldn’t you want to define what you are you trying to create together? Name it, call it out and work for it.
For me and my amazing team part of our shared vision is to “work hard, have fun and develop the individual, the team and the organization with leading practices.”
But what is a leading practice? As I started looking around at what other Talent Development teams were achieving in the industry, I got a bit of a surprise. It turns out that we were doing pretty great work. At one industry conference after another, I saw our opportunities through others’ success, and began to challenge our team to do more. At the same time, I began telling the ACS story. To my surprise, people were learning from us as well. Thank you to my awesome boss for encouraging me to do this, she is a large part of this journey.
In truth we can’t do everything a company with huge budgets can do, but one thing is certain: we do pretty amazing work!! We have the absolute support and encouragement of our executive (my boss), the spirit of innovation, and we have a great time doing it together.
As a result, this year we were recognized with 3 industry awards: Learning Elite, ATD BEST (a great article) and Learning in Practice Awards. I and several members of my team are being invited to speak at conferences all across the country and last month I was featured in CLO Magazine (click here to read the article).
The best thing about this success is the people I share it with. Simply stated, this team rocks. I am humbled and proud to work with them each day. Each person brings their unique strengths to bear and works collaboratively to achieve bigger than big results.
This shared experience and shared success is part of my personal vision – it’s part of the essence of BigLife.
As a team we’re living our vision too.
Vision can transform your life, it can create collective energy towards a shared goal, it can help you achieve more than you knew possible. The Talent Development team at ACS is living proof of that.
So ask yourself, are you limiting your vision with where you are today?
Are you thinking bigger than big?
